Life-Cycle Management
Beyond product launch and marketing, Encap is
able to work with customers in order to manage
the onset of generic competition and identify
new and more cost effective drug delivery technologies.
In some cases, this can result in the generation
of new intellectual property and improved product
performance.
Many international companies already trust us

fully integrated analytical development services,
clinical trial manufacturing, packaging and supply
management, project management, technology transfer
and contract manufacture. Our current customer
portfolio includes most of the world’s major
pharmaceutical, biotechnology, generic and nutrition
companies, we also undertake projects with virtual
and start-up companies and are able to tailor
our services to meet the needs of our customers.
Two examples of Encap’s Product Life-Cycle
Management approach are (i) Vancocin®,
a glycopeptide antibiotic used in the systemic
treatment of infections caused by resistant Staphylococcal
(staph) infections and in the oral treatment of
pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium
Difficile and (ii) FloraGuard™,
BioCare’s
unique 2-stage capsule product that combines probiotics
and plant oils.
Vancocin®
Capsules
Vancomycin is a systemic glycopeptide
antibiotic. In its injectable form it is used
in the treatment of infections caused by resistant
Staphylococcal (staph) infections, however when
administered orally it is effective at treating
pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium
Difficile.
Originally developed by Eli Lilly under the trade
name Vancocin® , it has been
territorially licensed to various companies in
Europe, India, USA, Japan and Australia. Since
patent expiry in the early 1980’s the generic
version of the drug is now also available under
a variety of trade names.
The recent increase in Clostridium Difficile outbreaks
throughout the World has now resulted in significantly
greater usage of the oral dose form that is optimally
delivered in a capsule. Encap has been a pioneer
in the development of encapsulation technology
to produce oral Vancocin®
and has now become the approved supplier of the
encapsulated finished product to many of the world’s
leading companies engaged in its marketing.
Encap was able to add value throughout all stages
of the development and production process that
included technical as well as practical assistance
and supporting the regulatory submission. From
project initiation, Encap was able to deliver
the first successful batch within 8 months and
managed the sourcing of appropriate grade of the
active ingredient and excipients. Encap now manufactures
the finished drug product at commercial quantities
which includes packaging and final release / Batch
Certification.
FloraGuard™
Encap applied its proprietary DuoCaps™
technology in order to improve the delivery profile
of BioCare’s
FloraGuard™ that contains a unique combination
of probiotics and plant oils. The DuoCap™
‘capsule-in-a-capsule’ system enables
the sensitive ingredients to be kept separate
and allows them to be released at different times
and parts of the digestive tract, one to the stomach
(Stage 1), the second to the intestine (Stage
2). A key benefit is that FloraGuard™ can
now be manufactured as a single nutritional supplement
that was not previously possible. FloraGuard™
was the winner of the "Best Product"
at the Natural Trade Show, Brighton 2004.
