Encap’s novel ABUSOLVE technology successfully used to develop new abuse resistant medication.
Pharmaceutical companies are under intense pressure today to develop new abuse resistant forms of drugs. This abuse resistance is especially desirable for opioids, stimulants, sedatives and antidepressants which may be susceptible to product tampering by the abuser.
One of Encap’s recent drug delivery innovations is its AbusolveTM technology designed to prevent misuse of drugs, either for recreational purposes or the more sinister issue of drink spiking. AbusolveTM is a suite of formulation approaches which combine to minimize the risk of a potential abuser’s tampering with the dosage unit, for example directly injecting the product, crushing and extracting the active or attempting covert administration to an another individual.
AbusolveTM works by creating a platform of hard shell encapsulation technologies which render the dosage unit resistant to crushing, melting and both chemical and physical attempts to extract the abusable drug. Various formulations can be developed which are in the main based on high melting point formulations filled into hard capsules. The technology is the subject of a US and EU patent application.
Encap has worked with many clients who are seeking to develop such products. In recent months, it has been announced that the FDA has accepted the Investigational New Drug (IND) filing for an abuse deterrent extended release strong opioid based on this technology.
